The United States of America (USA) was formed as a result of the American Revolution, which began in 1765 and lasted until 1783. Prior to the revolution, the land that now makes up the USA was largely under British control, with thirteen colonies established along the eastern seaboard.
The colonists began to resist British rule, demanding greater representation in government and an end to British taxation without their consent. In 1775, the colonists formed the Continental Army and declared their independence from Britain in 1776 with the signing of the Declaration of Independence.
The revolution continued for several years, with battles fought both on land and at sea. Finally, in 1783, the Treaty of Paris was signed, formally ending the war and recognizing the United States as an independent nation.
Over the next several decades, the country continued to grow and expand, acquiring new territories and states through purchase and conquest. Today, the USA is a federal republic composed of 50 states, a federal district (Washington, D.C.), and several territories.
