Multiple Regions Experience Earthquake Tremors: Punjab, Haryana, Jammu and Kashmir, Pakistan, and Afghanistan Affected
On Sunday, several regions including Punjab, Haryana, and Jammu and Kashmir experienced the unsettling tremors of an earthquake. According to the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre, the earthquake, measuring 5.2 magnitude, originated approximately 70 km southeast of Fayzabad, Afghanistan, around 10:19 am. The seismic activity left its impact on various areas, raising concerns among the residents. Authorities are closely monitoring the situation and assessing any potential damages caused by the tremors.
An earthquake originating at the border region of Afghanistan and Tajikistan sent tremors across various areas, including Punjab, Haryana, Jammu and Kashmir, and parts of Pakistan. The quake, with a depth of 223 km, had its epicenter located at "Lat: 36.56 & Long: 71.13, Depth: 220 Km" in Afghanistan, as reported by the National Center for Seismology. Fortunately, the depth of the earthquake significantly reduced its destructive impact. Srinagar and Poonch in Jammu and Kashmir also experienced the tremors.
The seismic activity was also felt in Islamabad, Peshawar, Swat, Haripur, Malakand, Abbottabad, Batgram, Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, Texlia, Pind Dadan Khan, and other parts of the country. Thankfully, no casualties or property damage have been reported thus far. Pakistan is no stranger to earthquakes of varying magnitudes, with the devastating 2005 earthquake claiming the lives of more than 74,000 people.
In a separate incident, Tokyo and other areas in eastern Japan were rattled by a strong earthquake with a magnitude of 6.1. The quake, centered off the east coast of Chiba Peninsula at a depth of 44.5 kilometers, did not prompt a tsunami warning, according to the US Geological Survey. Although there were reports of strong shaking in Chiba and Ibaraki prefectures, the USGS stated that the likelihood of significant damage or casualties was minimal.
